At the August 15 Board Meeting, the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution concerning education in Vermilion Parish. Thomas B. Thompson, Vice President of Governmental Affairs, delivered the resolution to the Vermilion Parish School Board at the Wednesday, August 16, School Board Meeting.

Message from Thomas B. Thompson, Vice President Governmental Affairs:

Recently some members of the Vermilion Parish School Board announced that they were dissatisfied and would no longer attend Board meetings.  The absence of a sufficient number of Board members to constitute a quorum placed the Board in violation of state law which required monthly Board meetings.  Additionally, because the Board could not meet due to the lack of a quorum, the expressed intentional absence of some Board members resulted in the inability of the Board to act on the budget as an agenda item for the coming school year.  In response to the situation with the Board the Board of Directors of the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce and the Executive Committee of Vermilion Post 29 of the American Legion issued resolutions calling for Board members to do their duty or resign from the Board.  “Simply put, representative government does not function when elected members of a governmental body refuse to perform the duties of their office.”

An article appeared in the Abbeville Meridional about the resolutions submitted by the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion. Due to the length of the two resolutions, only brief quotes were placed in the article. I want to share with the membership the resolutions that were presented at the meeting in their entirety. Click on the links below for the complete resolutions.
